And one from Kilu...

Ok this is funny, but for all the wrong reasons.

Just in case you're confused (it could happen!)...

Rainbows are of course a natural phenomenon caused when light hits water molecules in such a way that the light is 'scattered', some of the photons passing through the water at higher speeds than the others. This skewing causes us to see light at various different wavelengths on the electromagnetic spectrum, in the case of a rainbow, the full spectrum of visible light, from red to violet instead of the usual compound white. Maybe this woman is incredibly stupid, maybe she's just paranoid, but this rainbow is occurring naturally, not by anything in the water, oxygen, no salts, no chemicals in the grass... She's just mental. Using words like 'spectrum' which she clearly doesn't understand. And yes, you could achieve this twenty years ago... if we had sprinklers back then... Hmmm, '89, yeah we probably did.

*facepalm*

Let this be a lesson people. Retards are everywhere and some of them have nothing better to do than film rainbows and post their video on Youtube under the delusion that said rainbow is caused by some government conspiracy. Run. Run while you still can!

EDIT: Oh also. I just noticed she mentions the sun and the moon. FOR GOD'S SAKE! Rainbows do not encircle the sun and moon for one very good reason... THEY REQUIRE WATER! (or at least a fluid that behaves similar to water... methane for example) Does the moon have water? No. Rainbows do of course, encircle the Earth... Well ok, not encircle, but be warned, rainbows are NOT semicicles!! They are in fact, entire circles as witnessed by pilots! (among others)

And they don't just appear in the sky! Here's another like the woman's sprinkler, reflected in the waves of the ocean.

Click that to see the full picture.

And they are not even restricted solely to Earth. Scientists postulate that they may also occur on Saturn's moon, Titan. I'd love to hear that woman's explanation of how the government pulled that off.

  1. That proves my point that a big chunk of Americans are lunatic paranoid conspiracy terrorists...er theorists. The most creepy ones are Christian Fundamentalists or Ultraright wing hillbillies from the Bible belt or Midwest. If you have any doubts join a christian fundi forum then you know what i mean :o

For example the current debate about Obama-care which is compared to the Euthanasia program of the Nazis... Yeah i know i approved Godwin's Law again *eg*

Let me guess: That rainbow woman is a christian soccerwoman from a rural county? No? So much for my share of setting up clichés... But sadly enough those stereotypes are true :S

Ummm btw: I loved this blog topic since i specialised in Optics during my study and i did my diploma thesis in Polarization of Light :) Ya know i had a hard time to bite my tongue not to add smartass comments doing lectures about "Dispersion of electromagnetic waves in matter". But to be fair i forgot alot of details and had to reread on wikipedia just out of curiosity. Just in case some of you is interested: The Wikipedia articles about "Rainbow", "Dispersion of Light" are really good. :)

Umm... now i should move my ass and write that overdue comment concerning "Winter War", "Pound Sterling" and "(pre WW2) german stereotypes" :P

(Ahh that comment was fun) :)

  2. Lol one more funny thing approving Godwin's Law.

Read the comments of that video on Youtube:

    The Nazis did it!

"Dontcha know? Nazis and communists flooded our waters with mercury for big soviet damage."

    ROFL. ^^

  3. Oops after rewatching it for the 3rd time i noticed that lady is from Northern California and not a rural county. Hmmm.... But maybe she is a soccermom still? *scratches chin*

  4. Lol. Godwin's Law is so true. :P

An expert in light polarisation huh? :o Then there are probably many corrections to be made regarding my brief summary of how rainbows work, although I think my description is still far more accurate than the average American Idiot and will certainly suffice as an explanation to the blog readers en masse. I'll be honest, all I remember about rainbows was diffraction of light, prisms, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon... then there was a big bag of weed... and I forget the rest...
    :D

  5. I had a big "Dark Side of the Moon" poster hanging on the wall at my desk (yes the black one with the prism showing diffraction of light) during my diploma thesis time. The prof and the lab Engineers grinned at it and allowed me to do it :)

Your explanation of light dispersion in water molecule is quite correct so no prob with that ;)

And yeah i forgot alot too even with or without weed :P

  6. :) Yeah, badass album cover for Dark Side. Classic.
Glad my amateur science held up to close scrutiny! See, I *did* pay attention in school, even though I hated physics. :P
