Left 4 Dead

So for another day or two Left 4 Dead is half price on steam. Don't switch off! Hear me out. Left 4 Dead is a survival horror game, played co-operatively by up to 4 players, hence the oh so witty title. Pete and I have been waiting for that price drop and wasted no time (literally about three seconds after the announcement) before buying it. Today we finished the Death Toll campaign. Well. I did. Sadly Pete didn't make it.

It all started well. All we had to do was hold out in a house while we waited for the boat to arrive for us to get to safety. Simple right? And it was all going reasonably well. The first tank turned up (more on that later) and we pwned him. Shitloads (like a couple of hundred) of zombies poured in and through the cunning use of pipebombs and sheer firepower we tore them to shreds. We knew from previous failures that we had a second tank to face before the boat turned up. And sure enough, a short while before Pete yells out that the tank is coming. (The tank's a big fuckoff zombie, I'll show you soon). Well me being the smart one I'm sat upstairs watching the staircase, ready to unload my shotgun in it's enormous bulbous ass when it runs up the stairs. But it's deathly quiet... for about five seconds.. and then I hear Pete yelling...
"Ahhh shit, it's got me. Downstairs! I'm getting bummed in the pantry!"
Yes, the fool had tried to hide himself in the pantry and the beast tore the door off and proceeded to tear his limbs off. Somehow, I saved him. And the boat turned up! Hurrah! Victory?

Well yes and no. Pete grabbed the last pipebomb we'd been saving and lobbed it. The horde went nuts and another hundred or so were engulfed in the resulting explosion... but there was too many!! Arrrggghhh! We ran like fuck for the boat but the horde swamped us. A boomer threw up on me and blinded me. Pete got eaten by a tank. Like totally eaten. Dead. Covered in boomer vomit, half blind and limping like a weasel with one leg I managed to kill the tank feasting on Pete's corpse and fought off the horde as I inched my way across the pier to the boat. Another tank turned up and lobbed a piece of some random building at me and thank god he missed. I made it onto the boat, along with the two AI players. And we left Pete's corpse behind as zombie food. I'm still high off the adrenaline.

So... What the fuck am I ranting about? Well I thought you'd never ask.

First off, here's the cinematic opening to Left 4 Dead. It shows the basic kinda things you can expect from the game and serves a sort of tutorial. Ie, don't set off car alarms, etc. Oh and that huge hulking behemoth. That's the tank. Watch both of these in full screen for best impact. In fact, click watch on youtube in the bottom right corner and you can watch full screen and HD. Awesomeness.

And here is what the actual game plays like. This is the finale of the Death Toll campaign... where Pete bought it. :D

Those guys are pretty good though. We suck.
So yeah. Zombie mayhem. Mega adrenaline. FUCKING AWESOME!! Man I cannot wait for tomorrow night. Bring it on!
*pulls out shotgun*
*chu-chuk*
Let's do it!

  2. It is half price for the rest of today so move fast!! You will need...
    A steam account, from steampowered.com
A paypal account or visa card with which to give them your lovely euros.

    Install steam
    Register a free account
Find left 4 dead in the steam application and buy it!
Add me and my bro to friends. (I think our account names are chibi_charon and mizoreswan)
Start left 4 dead. If we're playing, you'll see our names! Click join game.
    ??????
    PROFIT!!

    :P

We have already recruited my buddy Kilu so tonight's jaunt will be a 3 man venture! Note though, you could really use a microphone for this game. As I said to Kilu, don't worry bout the language barrier. But it's handy to shout for help. In the heat of a melee we might not see a smoker drag you off into the woods so its handy if you can tell us where to come save you! Or if there's a tank coming. Or if you found a medkit you dont need. Or if you need healing, etc.

It's a pretty awesome game and you *can* play single player, or just with steam friends, or with anyone on the interwebs. But's it's only cheap for today...and maybe tomorrow not sure. After that the price goes back up. :)

  3. Great. The german version is on the index, and cut out of all blood & gore. Well now i have to find and uncut english version or austrian version with the same low price. Hmm seems it is sold out on amazon.co.uk. Too bad. Maybe on of you guys can buy and send me one on my postal address? That would be cool :) (i certainly would send you the money by western union or something)

  4. P.S: i only can buy the cut off version on steam. seems the site identifies me as a german buyer due to my IP address. (Have to double check it with a proxy).

  5. yup, i need a non german located IP to be able the non-censored version. Oh well... i hate living in the police state being called Germany. Well i am gonna try to buy it on an austrian shop then but sadly for full price. (50 Euron bucks) :S

  6. Got an inbuild mic on my laptop so that detail is covered :) Guess this game has some embedded teamspeak feature right? Or it uses it over that said steam account thingie? Anyways. I am looking forward to play with you guys. Hopefully soon.

  7. Yeah, the problem is whether a bought version will identify with steam as that is what we rely on for the ease of multiplayer and voice chat. Can't believe the german version is cut. O_O (The sequel is already banned in Australia and it's not even out yet so be thankful you don't live there).

I wonder how bad the cut version is...
Her'es a vid of the german version on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4y7baXPwGw
    Doesnt look much different!

  8. So in closing I'd say, bite the bullet, get the steam German version. Who knows, there might even be an unofficial patch to reverse whatever they cut. Steam is your best bet as we can't guarantee compatibility with you otherwise. >_<
Also, Audiosurf is currently dirt cheap on steam. I highly recommend that too. ^^

  9. Lol thats actually a brilliant vid. Listen to that guy scream like a girl!! Lol.

  10. Lotta german comments on it that I can't read. General consensus is that cut version = gay. but... it still looks plenty gory to me. Ok so I think the Eng version has more limbs flying and blood n guts. But that looked acceptable nonetheless. It's up to you. :P

  11. Oh here you go.

According to one of the games developers. The only thing removed was dismemberment. So I was right. No limbs flying, no guts. You Germans and your crazy censorship laws. Lol.

  12. Either way the half price sale has now ended. Left 4 Dead is back up to full price. :(

    ReplyDelete
  13. We just did campaign one again. Pete didn't make it. Lol. He epic failed. Got vomited on and eaten to death by a few hundred zombies. Me? I ran for the chopper and left him to it. :D

  14. "Either way the half price sale has now ended. Left 4 Dead is back up to full price. :("

Oh. Well. ... *sighs* I guess i'll buy it anyways. For full price. And full gore. So much standard i got to have. Even and especially living in a state of beginning censorship.

  16. Well keep hold of steam. With any luck, Steam will let you point it to your installed version as though you bought it through steam. If not, I'm not sure about online play. The way it currently works for us is through a friends only lobby. There is an open game lobby but it means anyone can join and play as the fourth player, and they might just kill us for fun, idiots do that. If it even lets non steam play with steam. I'll look into it. The other advantage of the steam version is the 68 achievements to unlock and the extra campaign which the retail version might not have.

Also, we just finished the second campaign... Pete didn't make it. LMAO.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ok. From what I can gather... You use the button in steam that says "Activate a product on steam". At that point I think you essentially own the game through steam (thus no longer requiring the disc). Compatibility should be fine and you'll probably get achievement access too. :D So make sure you keep steam because that's the easiest way to play with us. And add me and pete to friends. My account name is chibi_charon and pete's is mizoreswan.

  18. Poor Pete. ^^ ;)

Okay cool, thanks for your support Charon. So if i understand you correctly i should buy L4D on steam for better online support/features or at least activate it later after installation of the retail version. Kay. That leaves me with a last question: How much does it cost to be able to play on steam? I guess it is not for free or am i wrong? OR is it more like NWN and gamespy? (Buying of a certain game covers the online fees)

    ;)

J/k. Best regards to your bro. :)

  20. Steam is free. It's just a gaming platform. You can buy games through it. Maintain a friends list. Use voice chat. Etc. It's designed by valve, who made Half-life and also Left 4 Dead! Hurrah! So it's no surprise they offer integration on the retail versions.

So as far as I can tell. If you buy the retail version and activate it on steam, it essentially becomes the steam version, with full access to all steam features. The beauty of using steam for this game is to play multiplayer, I go on and set up a game and when you start left 4 dead, it has my name in the bottom corner and all you have to do is click join. And that's it. It's unbelievably simple.

Steam is essentially, games for life. Like, I own Audiosurf. They don't send me a disc. But on any computer in the world I can log into my steam account and download my copy of Audiosurf. Forever. :) So it's a pretty good gaming platform.

So yes, buy through steam or activate through steam for definite.

  21. forgot to mention: Steam sounds slick.

    :]

    ReplyDelete
  22. It is slick. I own all sorts of steam games. ^^ Pete and I can't wait for another zombie killing buddy! We both managed to survive campaign 3 so we're feeling pretty good at the moment. Campaign four coming up. :D

  23. Thank God Valve didn't decide to strip down the german L4d version to this:

note: Don't miss the end. It is hilarious ;)

P.S: After 2nd thought maybe they should have used that version. :P
Either Way i am gonna buy it next week somewhere i can get hold of it.

  31. SUCCESS!

bought the Games of the Year Edition of L4D at the local Multi Media Retailer for 20 euronautic bucks :)

The Good Side: It includes 2 Bonus Campaigns (from the Donwloadable Content i assume).

The Bad Side: The gay german cut version. Some peeps on forums stated it is annoying that dead bodies vanish instantly instead of lying on the ground. So it is less control tactical wise
    Body Count! ;)

Well, anyways i am gonna install the game now on my box. I hope to see you online tonite or the other day. Wish me luck!
